South West PDP Condemns Claims Against Makinde Over Oyo Abductions

The South West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly rejected recent claims against Makinde linking the Oyo State governor to the abduction of pupils and teachers in parts of the state. The party described the allegations made by former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose as reckless, insensitive, and capable of undermining efforts to address insecurity.

The controversy followed recent attacks by gunmen in Oyo State, including the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area. During a televised programme, Fayose suggested that the incident may have been orchestrated by the Oyo State Government as part of a plan to embarrass President Bola Tinubu.

The remarks generated criticism within the PDP, with party leaders arguing that security challenges should not be exploited for political purposes.

In a statement titled “Fayose’s Hypocrisy Exposed,” the South West PDP Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati, criticised the claims against Makinde, saying they lacked responsibility and sensitivity given the circumstances surrounding the abductions.

According to Atofarati, “At a time when Nigerians are being killed, abducted and displaced by criminal elements across the country, it is both shameful and unfortunate that a former governor would seek to convert a national tragedy into a platform for political mischief.”

The party further stated that such allegations were not only provocative but also reflected what it described as double standards regarding insecurity and public accountability. Atofarati urged Nigerians to reject efforts to politicise security challenges and reaffirmed the party’s support for Governor Seyi Makinde.

“The Southwest PDP urges Nigerians to reject attempts to weaponise insecurity for partisan advantage. We stand firmly with the government and people of Oyo State in this difficult moment and commend Governor Seyi Makinde’s unwavering commitment to the security and welfare of the people,” the statement read.

The PDP spokesperson also accused Fayose of remaining silent over the abduction of worshippers in Eda-Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, where armed men attacked a church, killed a visiting pastor, and abducted several worshippers who reportedly remain in captivity. According to the party, Fayose did not publicly criticise the Ekiti State Government over the incident despite the community’s proximity to his hometown of Afao-Ekiti.

The statement further questioned Fayose’s political conduct, noting his continued support for Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s re-election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) while still identifying himself as a PDP leader.

The dispute highlights ongoing political tensions within the PDP in the South West and reflects broader debates over how public officials respond to security incidents. The controversy surrounding the claims against Makinde also underscores concerns about the potential impact of political rhetoric on public confidence during periods of insecurity.

Political analysts note that comments relating to security matters often attract heightened attention because of their implications for governance and public trust.
