Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central in the Senate, has called on leaders and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to embrace reconciliation and unity in the interest of the party and the country.
The senator made the appeal following the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal concerning the party’s national convention.
She urged party members to view the ruling as an opportunity to move beyond internal disputes and strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
In a statement she personally signed and released on Tuesday, Akpoti-Uduaghan advised members of the party across the country to shift their focus from legal battles to reconciliation and rebuilding.
According to her, the party should prioritise unity and internal democracy in order to reposition itself for future political contests.
“The Court of Appeal has spoken, and as a democratic party that believes in the rule of law, we must shift focus from litigation to reconciliation and rebuilding,” she said.
Akpoti-Uduaghan also stressed that ongoing disagreements among party leaders should not undermine the expectations of party members at the grassroots level.
She said the interests of members and supporters of the PDP must remain a priority as the party prepares for upcoming elections.
“Our members across the grassroots must not become casualties of prolonged disagreements among leaders. Their aspirations and the future of our party must remain paramount,” she stated.
The lawmaker further urged party leaders to demonstrate compromise, dialogue and statesmanship in addressing internal issues within the party.
She said the present situation requires maturity and collective commitment from all stakeholders.
Akpoti-Uduaghan also called for an inclusive and credible national convention that would comply with the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
She added that the PDP must demonstrate readiness and capacity to provide leadership to Nigerians.
“Nigerians are watching, and we must show that the PDP remains ready and capable of leading the nation forward,” she said.
