ADC tackles Tinubu hardship and insecurity as key leaders of the African Democratic Congress, including David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, and Rauf Aregbesola, criticised the administration of Bola Tinubu over worsening economic conditions and security challenges during the party’s national convention in Abuja.
The convention, themed “So That Nigeria May Work,” brought together party leaders and delegates as part of the ADC’s efforts to consolidate its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party has been experiencing internal leadership disputes, with multiple factions laying claim to its structure. These disagreements have resulted in ongoing legal battles involving the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, raising concerns about cohesion within the party.
Despite these challenges, the convention proceeded in Abuja, where party leaders addressed national issues, particularly economic hardship and insecurity.
Speaking at the event, David Mark stated that ADC tackles Tinubu on hardship and insecurity as part of its broader political objective, adding that the party cannot be silenced despite challenges.
He said:
“I say to those who orchestrated these obstacles: you have not weakened us; you have welded us together.”
Mark further emphasised the importance of opposition in a democratic system, noting that Nigerians are seeking alternatives that can address current national challenges. Former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, criticised the economic situation, stating that rising costs have made it difficult for many Nigerians to meet basic needs.
He said:
“Ordinarily, having made such a promise and fared woefully, an honest president should simply step down and not seek re-election.”
Aregbesola also warned against what he described as attempts to retain power at all costs, adding that there would be no automatic transition in the 2027 election.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also addressed delegates, linking national challenges to governance issues and calling for political change.
He said:
“Now, we must rise and make sure that there is change, genuine change, a serious change to rectify all these challenges that are happening in the country.”
Other political figures, including Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, also spoke at the convention, raising concerns about security and economic indicators.
The convention concluded with over 3,000 delegates affirming members of the party’s National Working Committee and adopting revised party documents.
The position that ADC tackles Tinubu hardship and insecurity reflect ongoing political contestation ahead of the 2027 elections. It highlights growing concerns about economic conditions, rising living costs, and security challenges, which remain central issues in Nigeria’s political discourse.
The development also underscores the role of opposition parties in shaping national debate and presenting alternative policy directions.
