Opposition Leaders Visit Kwankwaso, Stress Opposition Unity Talks

Prominent opposition figures including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson visited Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso at his Kano residence on Monday, marking a high‑profile engagement among opposition leaders in advance of the 2027 general elections.

The visit, which coincided with the Sallah festival, brought together key political actors to interact with supporters and discuss shared interests within Nigeria’s multi‑party landscape.

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and a longstanding political figure in northern Nigeria.

His movement, commonly referred to as the Kwankwasiyya Movement, holds significant support in Kano State and parts of the north‑west.

Kwankwaso has previously served as Governor of Kano State, Senator and presidential candidate of the NNPP in the 2023 elections.

Nigeria’s political environment ahead of the 2027 polls features dynamic shifts among major political parties and figures, with opposition groups exploring avenues for cooperation and articulation of shared positions in national discourse and electoral strategy.

The visit to Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano state included appearances by Peter Obi, Governor Seyi Makinde and Seriake Dickson.

Photos of the gathering captured attendance by supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and political affiliates.

Obi, addressing the crowd, said he came to convey “felicitations” on the occasion of the Sallah festival and to express respect for the NNPP leader.

Obi also outlined priorities on economic revival, particularly mentioning efforts to restore key industrial hubs in Kano such as Bompai and Sharada and revive elements of the defunct Bank of the North—positions he related to broader efforts to improve regional economic strength.

The presence of Makinde and Dickson, alongside Obi, reflected a gathering of leaders from different political platforms engaging with Kwankwaso’s supporters in a public setting.

Local observers noted the concentration of supporters at the venue and the scale of attendance.

There were no statements during the visit from All Progressives Congress (APC) officials regarding the meeting nor official responses from APC leadership about the programme.

The APC remains one of Nigeria’s major political parties, in power since 2015 after winning the presidency and maintaining a broad national presence.

The gathering in Kano underscores sustained interaction among opposition leaders from different political backgrounds.

The engagement took place in the context of early political positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, as opposition parties seek visibility and opportunities to articulate alternative policy perspectives to the electorate.

Bringing together figures such as Obi, Makinde and Dickson in the same forum with Kwankwaso highlights a degree of cross‑party interaction among significant opposition personalities.

Such interactions may influence broader political coalitions, public engagement and voter mobilisation strategies as parties advance toward national elections.
