PDP Says It Awaits Appeal Court Judgment on Ibadan Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on Wednesday that it is waiting for the Court of Appeal to deliver judgment on the legality of the Ibadan national convention, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Hajiya Farida Umar, said in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

A Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, earlier validated the PDP national convention held in 2025 that led to the emergence of the Kabiru Turaki‑led National Working Committee.

Umar recalled that ruling but said the party’s focus remains on the pending appeal at the Court of Appeal.

The Ibadan convention and ensuing leadership disputes within the PDP have been subject to multiple court actions, with various decisions affecting party leadership and organisational structures.

Umar spoke during a distribution of food items, beverages and cash to PDP stakeholders in the 13 wards of Lafia Local Government Area, to support them in breaking the Ramadan and Lenten season fast.

She urged the justices of the Court of Appeal to do “the right thing” as she referenced the lower court’s decision.

She said the judgment of the Federal High Court in Ibadan showed that the court could be unbiased and aligned with the facts and law of the convention’s organisation but reiterated that the Appeal Court decision is now most important for the party.

Umar also made comments on the political position of the PDP in Nigeria, mentioning the party’s presence across the country despite defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Umar said, “The most important thing that we are waiting for now at the PDP is the Appeal Court judgment. We called on the Justices to do the right thing as the Ibadan court has done its own.”

The comments by the PDP deputy spokesperson underscore ongoing judicial processes affecting leadership recognition within one of Nigeria’s major political parties.

The outcome of the appeal could have implications for organisational legitimacy and party operations nationwide as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
