President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday swore in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) during a ceremony held at the State House, Abuja, the Presidency said.
The appointment of Disu followed a unanimous endorsement by the Nigeria Police Council at a meeting presided over by President Tinubu.
Disu had been serving as Acting IGP after the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.
Under the amended Police Act, the President has authority to oversee the appointment and swearing-in of the substantive head of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Nigeria Police Council comprises key national security and executive officials and plays a role in confirming leadership appointments in the force.
Disu took the oath of office at 2:53 pm, following the reading of his citation by the State House Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Abiodun Oladunjoye.
The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the federal cabinet, security chiefs, and other dignitaries.
Disu’s appointment came after the Nigeria Police Council unanimously endorsed him as the substantive IGP.
The council meeting took place at the State House in Abuja earlier in the week, presided over by President Tinubu.
There were no direct remarks attributed to President Tinubu or Disu reported in the available accounts of the swearing-in ceremony at the time of filing this report.
The swearing-in of Disu as substantive IGP marks the formalisation of his leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
The transition follows the resignation of his predecessor and underscores the government’s continuation of senior appointments within key security institutions
