ADC Spokesperson Says Removing Bad Civilian Govt Harder Than Military Rule

The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has stated that a bad civilian government is more difficult to remove than a bad military government, raising concerns about accountability within democratic systems.

Abdullahi made the remark while speaking on the state of the nation and Nigeria’s political environment ahead of the 2027 general elections, where he outlined the position of the ADC on governance and public accountability.

Nigeria operates a democratic system of government where leaders are elected through periodic elections.

Unlike military regimes, which can be removed through force or internal restructuring, civilian governments are subject to constitutional processes such as elections, legal challenges, or legislative actions.

Abdullahi’s comments reflect ongoing national discussions about governance, public accountability, and the role of opposition parties in strengthening democratic institutions.

According to Abdullahi, democratic systems may present challenges in removing underperforming governments because the process is structured and dependent on electoral cycles.

His remarks highlighted concerns about citizens’ ability to hold leaders accountable within the limits of constitutional frameworks.

He also emphasised the importance of civic engagement, noting that citizens must continue to use lawful means, including public expression and participation in democratic processes, to demand accountability from leaders.

Abdullahi further outlined the ADC’s policy direction, stating that the party’s focus is on prioritising investment in people through education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

He said governance should be measured by improvements in citizens’ welfare rather than macroeconomic indicators alone.

He also addressed economic reforms, including fuel subsidy policies, stating that interventions should be targeted at vulnerable groups to reduce hardship.

The statement contributes to ongoing discourse on democratic accountability and the effectiveness of governance systems in Nigeria.

It also reflects the role of opposition parties in shaping national debate and offering alternative policy perspectives.
