A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the verbal assault of a journalist by Peter Otti, the presidential aspirant of the Labour Party, during a recent press interaction, calling on all political actors to respect the rights of the press.
The incident occurred during a press briefing in Abuja where journalists were engaging Otti on issues related to his 2027 presidential campaign.
Reports stated that Otti allegedly used offensive language towards the reporter, prompting immediate reactions from political observers and party members.
The APC chieftain, who requested anonymity, stated that the assault undermines the professionalism of political discourse and infringes upon the constitutional rights of journalists to report freely.
The party leader urged political aspirants across the spectrum to maintain decorum during press interactions and avoid confrontations that could escalate into public altercations.
He emphasised that respect for journalists is fundamental to a transparent and accountable democratic process.
He also noted that political disagreements should be addressed through proper channels and dialogue rather than intimidation or verbal abuse.
The APC leader said, “We condemn in the strongest terms the verbal assault on a journalist. This behavior is unacceptable and unbecoming of anyone seeking public office.
Political leaders must set an example of respect and professionalism at all times.”
The condemnation underscores ongoing concerns about press freedom and the need for political actors to uphold ethical standards in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
Ensuring a safe and respectful environment for journalists is crucial for transparency, public accountability, and credible reporting.
