The impeccable candidate requirement for defeating President Bola Tinubu has been highlighted by Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who said only a leader of unquestionable integrity can succeed in future elections.
Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed was the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election alongside Peter Obi. The election positioned the party as a major force in Nigeria’s political landscape, drawing significant support across several regions.
Since then, political discourse within opposition circles has remained active, with debates focusing on electoral outcomes, party structures, and strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections. Baba-Ahmed’s remarks come amid these ongoing discussions and internal developments within the Labour Party.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed stressed the importance of presenting an impeccable candidate in any attempt to challenge the incumbent president. He said, “Whoever is going to defeat Tinubu must be somebody impeccable. And Nigeria has people with clean characters.”
He also reiterated his position on the 2023 presidential election, maintaining that the Labour Party won the poll. He referenced historical electoral disputes, including the June 12 election, to support his perspective on contested outcomes.
Baba-Ahmed raised concerns about the conduct of the election, particularly the electronic transmission of results, and argued that governance outcomes should reflect electoral credibility.
In addition, he confirmed his decision to leave the Labour Party, citing internal disagreements and what he described as a shift away from the party’s founding principles. He stated that he would be joining the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP). He said, “I am leaving the Labour Party… What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today.”
The emphasis on an impeccable candidate reflects ongoing debates within Nigeria’s opposition space about leadership quality, credibility, and electoral viability.
Baba-Ahmed’s remarks highlight the role of integrity and public trust in shaping voter perception, particularly in a political environment marked by intense competition and scrutiny. His departure from the Labour Party may also influence evolving political alignments, as opposition figures continue to explore coalition strategies and alternative platforms ahead of future elections.
